Nick Williams is Thriving as a Pinch Hitter and Showing Meaningful Growth at the Plate

With the signing of Carlos Santana the Phillies opened themselves up to a playing time crunch in right field. A big question entering the year was how the Phillies would split the playing time for Aaron Altherr and Nick Williams. Through 47 games, Williams has 19 starts and Altherr has 30. So far that splitContinue reading… Nick Williams is Thriving as a Pinch Hitter and Showing Meaningful Growth at the…

21 Games In; (Re)Visiting Two Early Storylines

With today’s 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies have now played 21 games in 2018, which means we are somehow already through about an eighth of the season.  Hard to believe, Harry. At 8-2 in their last 10 games and 13-3 since their embarrassing showings vs. Atlanta and New York to start theContinue reading… 21 Games In; (Re)Visiting Two Early Storylines Author: jackm From Feed: Powered by…

What Do the Phillies Have in Aaron Altherr?

September 19, 2017

Last night, Aaron Altherr finally got going after his trip to the disabled list. Altherr smashed an upper-deck go-ahead grand slam off Clayton Kershaw, the best pitcher in baseball. As it stands now, Altherr has been worth 1.3 fWAR in about a half a season of plate appearances, bashing 17 home runs and producing a 125 wRC+. It’s been a good bounce-back season for the Phillies’ outfielder, but he again…

Altherr’s Hot Start Hides Underlying Weaknesses (and Improvements)

May 15, 2017

It is not a controversial statement to say that Aaron Altherr is headed for some regression. His BABIP (.392), HR/FB rate (35.6%),and ISO (.381) are way outside of expected norms. The good news is that he is batting .333/.434/.714, so any regression would take him from an MVP pace to just a really good baseball player. When a player goes on a hot streak, it has a tendency to cover…

Crash Bag Vol. 18: Trading Cesar

Thank you to Brad for doing this last week, and for being much funnier in the process than I am. It has been a really bad week of results for the major league club, so why not talk about trading their best player so far, and answer some other questions along the way as well. For now the best place to ask questions is on Twitter, either @ me (@Matt_Winkelman…

Nola Injured and the Phillies Make a Trade

The Phillies 40 man roster will be a story all year, as they navigate the 11 players they added in front of the Rule 5 draft. With Clay Buchholz’s season ending injury and Elniery Garcia’s PED suspension, the roster opened up some. This was all just in time for injuries to hit the Phillies elsewhere. The heart attack inducing injury was to Aaron Nola’s back. Right now, all indications are…

The Wild Card: 2017 Player Preview for Aaron Altherr

via GIPHY Tommy Joseph snuck up on everyone in 2016. A castoff heading into last year, he made himself a focal point of this season’s offense. The Phillies have a guy on the roster who could shock people this year. With the hype around Nick Williams, Dylan Cozens and Roman Quinn alongside the acquisitions of Howie Kendrick and Michael Saunders, everyone has forgotten about Aaron Altherr. This is the 15th…

Nola Filets Fish

The Miami Marlins lineup is far less formidable these days without Giancarlo Stanton in it, and Phillies rookie Aaron Nola carved up that depleted Fish lineup this afternoon in a 2-0 victory at Marlins Stadium. The win gave the Phils three straight victories, taking 3 of 4 in the long weekend series. It also left […] Nola Filets Fish Author: Matthew Veasey From Feed: Powered by WPeMatico

Phillies Bats Chase Jays Out of Town
